The album Kaleidoscope presents Fantasias and Rondo by C.P.E.Bach and Sonatas by F.J.Haydn, performed by fortepianist Wang Yuehan on a replica of 1805 Walter fortepiano. These keyboard works, composed between 1778 and 1790, brim with delightful surprises. Unfolding with rhapsodic freedom, the empfindsam style flares in dramatic contrasts of affect and unexpected twists of harmony. The repeated gestures in the galant style are anything but monotonous, while recurring motifs are infused with fresh nuances and expressions each time. The music flows through ever-shifting emotional landscapes. Like a kaleidoscope, its patterns dissolve even as they form.
